Many visitors from Australia, New Zealand, the EU and the USA do not need a visa for stays up to 120 days, English is widely used in tourism, and Efate has hotels, tours and ATMs. Outer islands are a bigger step, with fewer services, more cash and island time. A first trip is easiest with a Vila base and one extra island.
The official currency is Vatu, cash still matters, and shops and offices keep island hours. Tipping and bargaining are not customary. Town water in Vila is generally treated and safe, but services thin quickly once you leave the main towns. Dress more modestly than a resort beach, and build slack into any plan that uses domestic flights.
Outside Port Vila and Luganville, expect basic clinics, limited shops, patchy power and little or no ATM. Carry enough Vatu, a first-aid kit, any prescription medicines and bottled water bought in town. Travel insurance should cover adventure activities and medical evacuation. The reward is quieter islands; the requirement is self-reliance.
