Nagol or Land Diving

  • What is it? Land diving (traditionally known as Nangol) is a ritual performed by the men of the southern part of Pentecost Island.

  • When does it occur? Every year on Saturdays from April to June.

  • What happens? The ritual, which started the idea of bungee jumping by Kiwi AJ Hackett, sees local men and boys as young as seven jumps off wooden towers around 20 to 30 meters (66 to 98 ft) high, with only two tree vines wrapped around the ankles.

  • The tower? Takes five weeks to build using vines and wooden stilts from the forest.
