Using local transports
Bus
Travelling by bus in Port Vila is a unique and convenient experience. Buses do not follow fixed routes or schedules, offering passengers great flexibility. The buses are usually minivans identified by a licence plate starting with the letter "B." To catch a bus, simply stand by the roadside and signal to the driver as they approach. Destinations are negotiated directly with the driver, and the fare depends on the distance travelled. Prices are affordable: 150-200 vatus per person for short distances and 300-500 vatus for longer journeys. It is recommended to have exact change.
Taxi
Taxis will provide you with a faster and more comfortable journey. You will also need their services if you wish to reach more remote areas on the island of Efate, as buses do not go there. Since there are very few buses on the island of Santo, it is also recommended to travel by taxi if you don’t rent a car.
Taxis do not have metres, so it is important to agree on the fare before starting the trip. They are usually identified by a licence plate starting with the letter "T."
Taxis can be found at designated stations, near hotels, airports, or simply hailed on the street.
The fare is negotiable and varies based on the distance and time of day. To go from the airport to Port Vila city centre, it will cost you approximately 2,500 vatus. To go from the airport to Pango, it will cost you approximately 4,000 vatus. To go from town to Blue lagoon it will cost you approximately 10,000 vatus.
For a hassle-free experience, it is advisable to have cash, as credit cards are not always accepted.
