bali-hai-cultural-festivalWhile the main celebration is normally staged at the Penama headquarter in Saratamata, East Ambae, celebrations are also being held in different centres on Ambae, Maewo and Pentecost.

In Port Vila, the Penama leaders and their people will celebrate the Penama Day at Saralana Show Ground.

All Penama leaders in the Government, the churches, the nakamals, schools and private sector will gather together at the Independence Park in the morning.

At 9am, the VMF Band will lead a march from the Independence Park to Saralana Show Ground where wide range of activities will take place throughout the day.

At 9am there will be a flag raising ceremony by the members of the Vanuatu Mobile Force followed by dedication prayer by Pastor Shem Temar of the Vanuatu Christian Council. This will be followed by a custom ceremony to be performed by the Penama Chiefs to the Vaturisu Council of Chiefs of Efate.

The custom ceremony will be led by Chief Lazar Asal, of the Cultural Centre.

Speeches will be made by the Penama representative, Chief Jonas Cullwick, representing Maewo community in Port Vila, Chief John Tarilama, representing Ambae community in Port Vila, Lord Mayor Ulrich Sumptoh, representing Penama Youths, followed by a speech from the Prime Minister Charlot Salwai, who is from Penama, and Penama Chief representative, Penama MP and Minister of Climate Change, Ham Lini.

The program in Port Vila includes children’s quiz, leadership forum to allow for the Penama people to meet their people, food sharing during lunch hour, Penama musicians will perform on stage and customs dances to come from the three islands of Ambae, Maewo and Pentecost that form the Penama Province along with skits and other activities.

The closing of the Penama Day today is at 5pm with closing prayer from the Catholic Church
