2017: 3.2km Iririki Island Charity Open Water Swim: 27th May

Its official, the Masterbathers are running their first ever International Charity Swim on Saturday the 27th May 2017!

Air Vanuatu have come on board as our major sponsors for the Masterbathers 2017 swim season and the International 3.2km Iririki Island Swim. Their support will allow us to offer great prizes, buy new equipment and provide safety/medical services on the day. All proceeds from the race entry (and food sold on the day) will go to the Vanuatu Aquatics Federation to the benefit of swimming in Vanuatu.

Drownings are common in Vanuatu with no water safety awareness nor ni-Vanuatu swimming schools before the Vanuatu Aquatic Federation was established in 2014.

Although we have no public swimming pools and very few ni-Vanuatu swimmers the Federation (through your support) are running a Swim Australia instructor course in May and plan to establish 2 new swim schools by the end of 2017. As Vanuatu is hosting the Pacific Mini-Games in 2017 we hope to get swimming established around the islands so we can have ni-Vanuatu representing their country on the starting blocks!

This year we will also be running a 3.2km relay event. So teams of 2 can swim 1.6km each. In addition ,there will be a short course competition so our local clubs & schools can compete too.

Water Conditions:

The water is normally like glass in the morning and crystal clear with an expected water temp of 24-26c and air temperature of 26-28c. Perfect! High tide is at 9.50am so most will be gliding over the reef edge with 2m+ of clearance – the only section to be wary of is over the point at Iririki where black urchins like to congregate along the race course.
